The Cambridge Writers’ Workshop Summer in Budapest & Prague Retreat feat. Rita Banerjee & Diana Norma Szokolyai – July 19-27, 2024

The Cambridge Writers’ Workshop Budapest and Prague Writing Retreat will be held from July 19 – 27, 2024 in the historic city center of Budapest, Hungary and Prague, Czech Republic. The retreat features writing and publishing workshops, craft seminars, and generative writing sessions for poets, fiction writers, and creative nonfiction writers. The faculty includes poets and prose writers Rita Banerjee and Diana Norma Szokolyai. The cost of the retreat is $4,800, which includes tuition, lodging, daily breakfast, and special meals. Using only the online application system, submit 5 to 10 pages of poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, or hybrid work, and a brief cover letter (including a bio and contact information for two references) with a $10 application fee by June 1. Early applications strongly encouraged as seats are limited on the retreat. Multilingual poetry and prose submissions, including self-translations, are welcome. Partial scholarships for BIPOC writers, LGBTQ+ writers, writers who are students, and writers who are parents are available. To apply for a scholarship, submit a general retreat application, as well as a cover letter, including a statement on how the scholarship will assist you in meeting your writing goals, by May 15. KCAW Raven Radio’s “The Library Show feat. Rita Banerjee” airs May 7, 2023 – 10:30 am AKDT

During the the Tongass Mist Writing Retreat (April 12-16, 2023) in Sitka, Alaska, Visiting Rita Banerjee sat down with Brooke Shafer, one of the hosts of “The Library Show” on Raven Radio (KCAW, 104.7 FM Sitka, Alaska). Brooke Shafer asked Rita Banerjee about her favorite books, current reads, what drew her to writing, what it’s like to teach creative writing, and the memoir and manifesto on female cool that she currently working on. Banerjee also got a chance to read from “Cool as Kin,” a new chapter from her memoir on-air.

The Tongass Mist Writing Retreat featuring Visiting Writer Rita Banerjee will take place at the Tongass Fine Arts Campus in Sitka, Alaska from April 12-16, 2023. Applications are now open through March 19, 2023 at tongassmist.com.

Tongass Mist Writing is owned and operated by Ruth Underhill @ruth_elizabeth_underhill, a local Sitkan with a dream to see more writers experience and cherish the mists of the Tongass National Forest with the knock of raven call and sound of rocks rolling up the shores of this beautiful Tlingit Aáni land where she lives as a very lucky guest. Ruth shapes retreats and writing resources to allow #artists to carry its wild and beauty into their diverse and empowered writing. The retreat includes lodging on an oceanfront campus, daily meals, wilderness excursions, six literary salons, fireside readings, a wildlife cruise, and sauna. Tongass Mist welcomes its second visiting writer to Sitka in April 2023. Rita Banerjee will join the Sitka Fine Arts Campus April 12-16th for a four day retreat featuring wilderness excursions, generative writing salons, readings by a fire, literary craft talks and the incomparable experience of creating, enjoying a welcoming art community in the heart of the Tongass National Forest. Creative nonfiction requires intimacy and vulnerability. Within a genre where the relationship between “I” and “you” is always on the line, how can we as writers forge connections between self and other? By exploring the electric space of collaboration and conversation, panelists will discuss how writers of color and white writers can make otherized identities familiar and new American narratives viable.

Cambridge Writers’ Workshop Summer 2018 Retreats feat. in The Hindu

The Cambridge Writers’ Workshop is delighted to have its 2018 Summer in Paris and Summer in Granada, Spain Writing Retreats featured in the Indian newspaper The Hindu.  In the article, “Artists’ and writers’ retreat throw open doors for a creative vacation,” journalist Sujatha Shankar Kumar writes:

Accomplished writers Rita Banerjee and Diana Norma Szokolyai started the Cambridge Writers’ Workshop (CWW) in 2008 as a literary writing forum set in Cambridge. “At its heart, CWW has a bi-fold model — French literary salon and the Bengali adda,” says Banerjee, explaining how they nurture non-hierarchical, productive and liberal spaces where writers perform and debate their work. Retreats in New Orleans, Paris and Granada have morning classes and afternoon tours, as Banerjee says, “We wanted writers to get snapshots of culture.” Their upcoming retreat in Granada (August 1 to 6) has Banerjee teaching the Law of Desire (how desire creates conflict) and creating memorable characters. Tim Horvath will explore ‘the five senses’ in Spanish, and Szokolyai will impart the history of flamenco and Roma literature. The fee includes tuition, lodging, a flamenco show, a tapas tour of the city and breakfast.
